The Big 4

There are big 4’s existing in every industry but music it is well known from the Big 4 in Trash Metal (Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeath) , Big 4 in Grunge etc.

Although the Big 4 in Trash Metal are my favorites but the big 4 I’m discussing is the Four Noble Truths described by the Buddha.

This is the most important central teaching by the Buddha. The Four Noble Truths are,

1. Life is suffering

2. Suffering occurs due to attachment or craving

3. Cessation of suffering is ending attachment or craving (due to ignorance)

4. The path to Cessation of suffering is noble eightfold path

The way I understand and experience the Four Noble Truths are , you feel unsatisfied with life , when you loose what you have or if you don’t have what other people have or if you are away from your family and friends. This un satisfied feeling is caused because you crave (attached) to them.

As the everything in the universe is impermanent and constantly changing your life will experience this unsatisfied feeling very often. Although it does not mean the life is does not have value.. it does. This is the nature of the universe and all beings go through this.

The 1 & 2 will make the beings go in a never-ending cycle of rebirth , which means more suffering.

Until Buddha discovered the 3 and 4. By eliminating the craving/attachment the beings are able to get out the cycle of rebirth and end suffering.

For this Buddha suggested Noble Eightfold path which I like to call the Big 8.. (in the next blog post)

Walk the Line–Hello I’m Johnny Cash

I'm wondering why it took me 7 years to watch this movie. This just open me up to whole new world , the world of Johnny Cash.

I saw the parody movie Ward Hard based on this movie so many times on Cable and recently found the special edition DVD at the shop.

Although the movie was quite long, I enjoyed every bit of it. I love how Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon played and sang like Johnny Cash and June Carter. My personal feeling is they both should have won the Oscar for this movie, although only Reese one it.

The music selected for the movie was very good and it was a true portrayal of that era.

This movie open me unto to the music of Johnny Cash , which I became Fan immediately and started looking for his Vinyl. Discovered all his wonderful studio albums and also great Live albums like “At Folsom Prison” and “Live and San Quentin”

Johnny cash is a real Rock Icon.. and great human being.

Few thoughts on Food

Have you ever thought of this?

1. Majority of people don’t even have one meal day while others divide the one meal into several parts (entree, appetizer, main course , dessert etc.)

2. Majority of people only have one meal a day while others are not satisfied with three meals they created other in-between meals (brunch)

3. Majority of people don’t have a choice and have to eat what ever is available while others have luxury of choosing to skip meals or eat only type of food they like

4. Majority of people eat of garbage while others throw up the food they just ate

5. There are countries where majority of people are starving while other countries over produce and throw away the food to the ocean to keep the food prices up

SuperHeavy Album launch during Super Heavy Rain

Recently there was a Album launch event was held at Top Shelf @ Fully Booked , Bonifacio High Street , Taguig City for the album SuperHeavy from the super group SuperHeavy.

This super group is made of Mick Jagger ,Dave Stewart , Joss Stone, Damien Marley , A R Rahman , which brings a wide variety of genres ,generations, styles of music and cultures together.

I was privileged to attend this event as I was able to meet the Father of Pinoy Rock Joey "Pepe" Smith , who was a special guest at the event.

What really defines me ? I think two things mainly defines myself.

My Family and My Work.

Everyday of the week I spent 12-16 hours on work. I know my friends would agree I am a Super workaholic. I remember there are some months which i worked all 30 days.

In between time and the weekends are mostly spent with my son and wife, which I enjoyed the most and live for.

But all this is quite a responsibility and it drains you physically and mentally, it’s builds frustration ,anger & aggregation daily where someday you might burst and go insane.

How I deal with this?

I go to Live Concerts. Heavy Metal Concerts. This is where Pulp Live comes in. They organize the best Metal concerts in the Philippines.

The concert is the only outlet I have to deal with the Anger ,Aggression and let it out. It also give me the opportunity have time for myself and let me do what i like the most.

Also have a beer and relax, also let me meet interesting people and make new friends.

I have attended may concerts in last couple years and this had kept in Sane and would like to thank Pulp for this.

As most of you know I’m love music. Most of leisure time I spend listening to music, attending concerts and collecting CDs and memorabilia. I love all kinds of music but consider myself a metal head.

NKOTBSB (New Kids On the Block & Backstreet Boys)

We all remember Boy bands , they were famous in the 90’s. Although everybody says they hate them, but they will still enjoy it if it’s played on radio.

The two most iconic boy bands New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys have come together for concert tour and the name of the concert tour is NKOTBSB (yes you guessed it) .

NKOTBSB will be releasing their concert tour album in soon and it’s probably a good album to buy if you cherish the 90’s.

LULU - Lou Reed & Metallica

Metallica is one of the best trash metal bands who had mainstream success and also a huge underground following as no 1 trash metal band in the world.

Lou Reed , for guitarist of The Velvet Underground , which was a very underground band. Lou Reed also had a solo career for decades.

Metallica and Lou Reed performed in 2009 at Madison Square Garden for 25th-anniversary celebration of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. They played two song “Sweet Jane” & “White Light/White Heat”.

After this performance they have been working on a collaboration album titled “LULU” . This will be released on October 2011.

This is a awesome album to look for…. rock on!.

Create Pipe Delimited CSV Files from MS Excel

If you are working on Data migration most of time the clients will provide the data in Excel Spreadsheets. You can convert XLS/XLSX files directly to CSV using Save as option. CSV are great data format for data processing or loading to database tables using tools like SQL Load.

The main issue arises when Excel spreadsheet contains commas in the fields , like in an address where the each word is suffixed with a comma. Although Excel saves these fields included in double quotes , it’s still messy when loading to SQL Load and you will have to use additional clause to specify that fields maybe optionally enclosed with double quotes .

The solution is to use uncommon character as a delimiter instead of comma, The Pipe (“|”) is a great choice. But if you save the file in CSV then you need to open the file in a Text editor and replace all commas with pipe symbol. Also you need to be careful that you will not replace any commas within the data field values.

Instead of doing that you can simply save the Excel spreadsheet directly to Pipe delimited file by following below instructions.

1. Start—> Control Panel

2. Click the Clock, Language and Region option

3. Select Region and Language Option

4. Click Additional Settings

5. Replace List Separator field value from comma to pipe

6. Press Ok and exit .

7. Open the Excel Spreadsheet and Save as CSV.

It’s that simple.

How to Sleep (wait) in PL/SQL

When you writing code in PL/SQL , you some times need to have logics for the application to sleep before the next processing. In PL/SQL you can use the below syntax for this

Enable in-line comments in Outlook 2010

When you are replying to emails , it’s more appropriate to reply in line to some part of the email. You would like to mark your comments with a tag of your name for user id.

This can be automated in Outlook 201 by following steps

On the File menu, click Options.

On the Mail tab, click Signature and Fonts.

Select the Mark my comments with check box, and add the tag you want to appear in the email.

Thoughts Unrest in the Middle East & North Africa

Recently we been seeing protests in the Middle East and North African countries like Libya, Egypt, Tunisia.

These are my thoughts on this.

1. Good bye to dictators & Monarchs

Most of these governments are made of Leaders who came to power either after independence from Western countries or by Military Coups. These leaders have ruled these countries for decades . Even some case more than 40 years.

People are tired of these old leaders, people looking for a change.

2. Welcome Freedom of speech and assembly

Most of these countries does not allow people freedom in Free speech or protests. and some countries like Algeria and Egypt were in State of Emergency for decades.

It’s the 21st century it’s time now for people to be free

3. End to Greed, Fraud and Corruption

Most of these countries have rich resources like Oil. But these are controlled by Government and run as family businesses. People are not getting a fair share of their countries resources.

Regular citizens are struggling with Unemployment ,rising food prices, and More opportunities of education,such as earning an online international business degree, needs to be more accessible and affordable. while the Leadership and their families live luxurious lives.

Most of the institutions are state owned so Fraud and Corruption is unavoidable. There is no room for independent audit or investigation.

4. Democracy

In countries like Libya they don’t have elections or even political parties.

People want democracy and representation.

5. Facebook and Internet

Facebook , you tube and other social networking sites allow the young people to spread the message and unite. Internet has become like the ultimate weapon these people found after decades.

My IPhone won’t start–Fixed

My IPhone 3GS suddenly turned it self off , and did not respond to the PC or Power Adaptor connected.

Lastly I tried pressing the Lock and Home Keys several times.

I left the phone on Power Adaptor connected for about 5 minutes and then press the Lock and Home key and didn’t let go.

OH, the phone got started……

Quick Tip–How to Create a DB Link without defining TNS on the DB Server

A database link is the way Oracle allows you to connect from one database to another.

When creating a DB link the Database TNS for the target Database should be added on the Calling Database server.

Most of the time Developers face the issue of having access to Database but does not have access to Unix to update the TNS Entry.

In such cases you can create the DB Link directly and specify the TNS at the DB level.

CREATE DATABASE LINK ORCLlink CONNECT TO scott IDENTIFIED BY emp USING '(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=( ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=192.168.1.34)(PORT=1521))) (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=ORCL)))'

This worked on 9i, 10g databases without issue.

What is new in iPhone OS 4?

The iPhone OS 4 was released last Monday and I tried the update on my iPhone 3GS. Following are my honest opinions on the new features

1. Multitasking

This is not the same thing you would expect. This feature would allow you to switch from one application to another easily plus allow the applications to run in the background. This is good if applications support this feature. For Example there is no Skype Version with multitasking yet.

2. Folders

This is a cool feature. If you move and drop an app on top another app then it creates a folder and also gives a name based on the application type. This good for organizing your apps

3. New Mail App

Only thing I noticed was a All in one Inbox . Also they claim the emails organized in thread (Gmail Style) - to be find out.

4. iBooks

Now the iBooks from iPad is available for iPhone Users. you can download ebooks. The e-book reader is better than most of the available other apps

5. 5X digital zoom

Now you can zoom when you take photos

6. Photo and Places

Photos can be viewed based on where it was taken. A Google map will show you where the photos are taken.

7.Home Screen Wallpaper

The wallpaper on the lock screen is now displayed on the home screen as well.

COLSEP

If you want to create a CSV or Pipe Delimited file from SQL query , normally you would do is concatenate the output fields using comma or Pipe (“|”). The disadvantages of this way is you cannot add custom column headers and if you run the script is Toad the results will be displayed in on Column not individual column. The solution is as follows,

SET COLSEP |

SET COLSEP ,

Add the above command on top of SQL Script. COLSEP replace the space between output columns with the character specified.

LINESIZE

When you are creating a report or insert statement using SQL*Plus you constantly face the issue of the record breaking in to the next line due to buffer limit. This can be stopped by specifying the size of the buffer as follow,

SET LINESIZE 500

PAGESIZE

When you are generating a report from SQL*Plus you will get a blank line between every 5, 6 records. This due the limit on the page size. This can be avoided by setting the page size to zero.

SET PAGESIZE 0

HEADING

You may to stop displaying the column headings on the SQL Output. You can set this off.

SET HEADING OFF

2. How to skip fields in CSV files

Use FILLER column

E.g.:- if you have a table called EMP with following structure

EMP_ID

EMP_NAME

DEPT_NO

But the CSV source file has extra columns at the end and in between these columns.

ID,NAME,SALES_GROUP,DEPARTMENT,AREA

The control file should look like below

EMP_ID,

EMP_NAME,

SALE_GROUP FILLER,

You can use any unique name for the Filler column

Updating Figure Numbers automatically in MS Word [2007]

Some times you will have to add a lot of diagrams and graphics to word documents for better understanding. There is a saying a picture worth thousand words. For these pictures you would add captions or figure tags with a reference number.

When you add new pictures or remove the existing one , you will end up the figure numbers been out of order.

Normally if you highlight the figure number and right click and select update field will update the figure to the correct sequence.

But if you have several hundreds of pages this is a tedious .

Following is a short cut.

1. Select the whole document (Press CTRL+A)

2. Press F9

3. Save

This will update all fields automatically.

Note: this should work on the older versions of MS Word as well

Is YouTube dying?

When YouTube was launched it wad immediate hit. Everybody was posting videos from personal clips, music videos, concerts, movie trailors etc.

YouTube was a good for research if you want to find out about a band or movie you got everything you need. If you use this with Wikipedia that was a great combination.

Also YouTube became the entertainment channel for people who cannot afford original music , movies and didn't have cable tv.

When record companies, movie studios , tv channels came into the picture, they immediately forced YouTube to remove copyright infringement material from YouTube. They also started having there own channels.

But it's not the same , these channels does not giveaway good clips.

Miss those YouTube days.
